The Annulus Billabong in Melbourne’s Lower Yarra River Floodplains had dried up due to urbanisation, dam construction, and climate change, threatening indigenous plants and birdlife. Melbourne Water needed a temporary pipeline solution to re-water the billabong while minimising disturbance to the delicate ecosystem.
Crusader Hose supplied Waterlord® layflat hose paired with the Argyle™ Trailer-mounted Reel System. Unlike rigid HDPE pipes, layflat hose adapts to terrain, minimising excavation and environmental impact. The reel system streamlined deployment and retrieval of 200 m lengths of 8” hose, reducing manual handling and labour strain.
Impact
The project restored water levels in the Annulus Billabong, supporting indigenous plants and birdlife. Scheduled re-watering every two years will now be faster and more sustainable thanks to the Argyle™ Reel System.
“This ingenious reeling system can quickly and easily deploy up to 200 m of hose in a fraction of the time it would take to do it by hand.”
