Maritime Fuel Transfer System for the Korean Navy

Rapid-deploy bulk fuel transfer system for ship-to-shore operations in challenging environments

Power Profile

Overview:

The South Korean Navy required a fast, reliable, and environmentally responsible solution to transfer bulk fuel from vessels to shore and inland across shallow coastal waters. Crusader Hose delivered a modular layflat hose system enabling rapid deployment, high-volume transfer, and minimal environmental impact.

Customer:

South Korean Navy

Location:

South Korea (Coastal / Beachhead Operations)

Industry:

Defence

Application:

Sea Pipelines/Inland Systems

South Korean Navy

Challenge:

Fuel logistics operations required a system capable of rapidly transferring large volumes of fuel from vessels to shore and inland across complex environments.

Key challenges included:

  • Deploying up to 2 km across shallow, environmentally sensitive coastal waters
  • Operating reliably in all-weather conditions
  • Managing fuel transfer across rough terrain beyond the shoreline
  • Minimising environmental impact on marine ecosystems
  • Ensuring rapid setup to maintain operational readiness

Traditional systems lacked the flexibility, speed, and environmental performance required for these conditions.

Solution:

Crusader Hose supplied a modular maritime fuel transfer system designed for rapid deployment and high-volume pumping across both marine and land environments.

The system included:

  • 2 × Busan Reel Systems (each with 1,500 m hose capacity)
  • 1 × Argyle Reel System for modular land-based deployment
  • 4 km of 6” Petroline® layflat hose

Key advantages of the system:

  • Compact storage and transport, enabling fast mobilisation
  • Rapid deployment capability from ship to shore
  • High flexibility, allowing operation across water and uneven terrain
  • Low environmental impact, minimising seabed disturbance

Results:

The system delivered exceptional operational performance:

  • Deployment time: under 1 hour
  • Pumping initiated within: 2–3 hours
  • Fuel transfer rate: >2,000,000 litres per day
  • Reduced setup complexity, enabling faster operational readiness
  • Minimal flotation required, due to hose buoyancy
  • Low seabed impact, preserving sensitive marine environments

The system met operational and environmental criteria, delivering a robust, scalable fuel transfer solution suitable for military and emergency logistics operations.

Commercial Advantage

This system offers a fast, scalable solution for fuel logistics in remote or temporary operations—ideal for commercial fuel providers, emergency response, mining, and infrastructure projects. It reduces downtime, improves delivery flexibility, and ensures continuity in even the most challenging environments.
